Purpose of the Internship

The African Union Internship Program provides an opportunity for interns to complement their educational experience and to develop their professional skills and experience through The AU internship program is a full-time engagement through which qualified individuals from diverse academic backgrounds are given the opportunity to gain professional exposure within the AU. As an organization which promotes respect for diversity and team work, we encourage all qualified individuals to apply. The program aims to expose participants to the workings of the AU at an early stage of their professional career and strengthen their personal and professional skills. Eligibility Requirements

•    Actively enrolled in at least the final year of a Bachelor’s degree program OR
•    Must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree or an advanced/ post graduate (Masters) qualification in a related academic field; 
•    Be nationals of a Member State of the African Union.
•    Be full time students currently enrolled in the final year of their Bachelors or graduate school program.
•    Be fluent in at least one of the African Union working languages (Arabic, English, French or Portuguese).
•    Be no more than thirty-two (32) years of age at the time of selection.
•    Possess the highest standard of moral conduct and integrity.
•    Have not been convicted of any serious criminal offence excluding minor traffic offences.  
•    Prior work experience is not required for the internship positions.
 

Terms and Conditions

•    The AU will have no financial obligation towards interns – travel arrangements and cost of accommodation and living expenses will be the responsibility of the interns. 
•    AU will use reasonable efforts to assist the interns in obtaining their entry and residence visas.
•    Interns will not be entitled to any compensation for travel. 
•    The internship will be authorized only once for three (3) month renewable one time for any candidate
•    Interns are not entitled to medical travel or medical evacuation to and from the internship location at the expenses of the Commission. Interns shall therefore have an individual insurance coverage throughout the duration of the internship.
 

Required Skills

•    Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
•    Proficiency in one of the AU officials working languages (French, English, Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish, Kiswahili) and fluency in another AU language(s) is an added advantage

We aim to bring diverse perspectives to science by offering opportunities to talented early career individuals without an academic background. This fellowship can fund internships, research projects, personal development, and support for young parents pursuing further training.

Who can apply?

This fellowship is for apprentices, dual students or early career professionals without a university degree and less than five years of employment. Applicants must pursue their current apprenticeship or profession in a German-speaking country (Germany, Austria or Switzerland).

We particularly encourage applications from parents with children and people with German as a second language. Time taken for parental leave or other exceptional circumstances does not contribute to the five-year period.

The African Economic Scholars Program (AESP) is an initiative tailored towards building the next generation of policy makers in Africa through exposing them to avid tools and training.   Our Scholars consist of highly skilled undergraduates who are either in their penultimate or final year studying towards a degree in Economics, political Science, International Relations and other related courses.   • One is enrolled in a Master’s of Public Policy program at UC Irvine.

  • One is an immigration policy fellow at the Niskanen Center.
  • One is a health policy analyst at the Niskanen Center.

Our interns are now also at MSNBC, Booz Allen Hamilton, McKinsey, Foreign Policy, the Daily Caller, the Cato Institute, the Department of Defense, Americans for Prosperity, the Center for Law and Social Policy, the Charter Cities Institute and others. Other former interns are in law school and some are pursuing graduate degrees in public policy, public administration, and economics.

The IOM Internship Programme provides students with the opportunity to learn about IOM’s activities, to gain initial work experience, and/or gain knowledge on a broad range of migration technical areas and disciplines. IOM provides on-the-job training to interns so that both they, and the Organization, can benefit. Furthermore, internships build links with academic institutions and universities. Each year, IOM welcomes hundreds of interns to work within IOM offices globally. Interns are given assignments and responsibility commensurate with their academic and professional experience and are placed under the guidance of a supervisor.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants to the IOM internship programme must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
  2. Be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    Have graduated with a university or graduate degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one-year of graduation; or
  3. Be sponsored by a governmental/non-governmental institution and/or academic institution to work in a specific area relevant to both IOM and the sponsor institution.
  4. All interns must be between 19 and 36 years of age (average age is 26).
  5. Furthermore, interns should have a working knowledge (both oral and written) of at least one of IOM’s official languages (English, French or Spanish).

Duration

Flexible internship: From 2 to 6 months depending on applicants availability.

Renumeration

Paid: While the majority of interns receive a monthly subsistence allowance (MSA), which is a monetary stipend to partially cover accommodation and living expenses, there are a few exceptions. For example, if IOM has an agreement with a university to provide internship assignments to its students as part of their coursework or when an intern is provided with funding/scholarship through their university, government or other institution. In exceptional cases, the Director of Human Resources can waive the MSA for interns who reside locally.

Travel Support:

It is the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institution to arrange for travel to and from the duty station upon commencement and conclusion of the internship. All related travel expenses, including visas, will be paid by the intern or sponsoring institution. IOM does not cover the cost of travel or visas; however, the office can prepare a visa support letter to facilitate the acquisition of a visa.

This Call for proposals is also based on the Joint Programming Ghana 2021-2027, which mainstream youth empowerment and support to civil society throughout its priority areas. Support measures in favour of Civil Society will contribute to promote civil society as a catalyst for development through active citizen
participation, as well as to increase civil society’s participation in the formulation and implementation of
government policies and programmes in Ghana. The Call for Proposals is also built taking into account the Roadmap for European Union’s engagement with Civil Society in Ghana 2021-2024.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME AND PRIORITY ISSUES
The global objective of this call for proposals is to empower young people to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Ghana.
The specific objectives of this call for proposals are:
SO (1): To enhance youth civil society’s engagement in public affair by strengthening individual and
collective capacities of youth-led and youth-focused organizations.
SO (2): To increase opportunities for young individuals in Ghana to act as leaders for sustainable development at social, economic, cultural and political level.

Outputs contributing to specific objective 1:
1.1.Capacity building of youth-led and youth-focused Civil Society Organisations tailored on their needs,
including in management, communication, fundraising, coordination, networking, financial
accountability, policy dialogue and advocacy.
1.2.Youth organisations are provided with the necessary financial resources (financial support to third
parties) to implement projects and activities to contribute to sustainable development and drive positive
change in their communities.

Outputs contributing to specific objective 2:
2.1.Comprehensive programmes empowering social entrepreneurs7 and change-makers, including youth
incubators for social change, which aims at providing young leaders and entrepreneurs with the necessary
skills and resources to develop their ideas and social initiatives from planning to implementation are
supported.

Job Role: Office Manager

Reports to: Team Lead

Contract Duration: Until 31.12.25

Location: Accra

Tasks:

Assist in the organization of events, meetings and workshops and support with corresponding documentations within the project.

  • Assist Project Managers in coordinating and monitoring the implementation of projects with partners.
  • Assist Project Managers in the preparation of the project completion and evaluation reports.
  • Support with administrative procedures for Project Managers with regards to Travel Requests and Events.
  • Handle the purchase and maintenance of office equipment and supplies, ensuring the office is fully stocked and operational.
  • Manage project inventory in WINPACCS and maintain an organized filing system for all inventory-related documents.
  • Coordinate and supervise support staff, including drivers and cleaning personnel, to ensure seamless office operations.
  • Lead the planning and coordination of office events, team-building activities, and other cultural celebrations to foster a positive workplace
    environment.
  • Ensure the office environment is clean, safe, and well-maintained by liaising with cleaning staff and overseeing repairs or renovations as needed
  • Assist in the onboarding process of new staff for the project.
