The James Buchanan Fellowship is a one-year, competitive fellowship program awarded to scholars in any discipline who have recently graduated from their doctoral programs. The aim of this fellowship is to encourage early-career scholars to critically engage ideas in the political economy of Adam Smith and the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy. In addition, James Buchanan Fellows will be introduced to contemporary applications of these ideas to questions in social sciences dealing with the dynamics and institutional underpinnings of economic, political, and social coordination.

James Buchanan Fellows spend two weekends in residence at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) and three days together virtually during the academic year participating in discussions on mainline political economy. Each colloquium is structured around a set of readings and includes discussion sessions, lectures, formal meals, and hospitality. Hayek Program scholars, affiliated scholars, and alumni of our James Buchanan Fellowship serve as discussion leaders and participants during the colloquia. Fellows will join a network of Mercatus students, alumni, and scholars who are conducting and engaging with cutting-edge research in contemporary political economy and are eligible to apply for conference and research funding.

What the SARB does
The SARB serves the economic well-being of South Africans through maintaining price and financial stability. Description
Data science is an inter-disciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured and unstructured data. The core outcome of this programme is to develop deep capabilities in advanced analytics in central banking.

Format of the programme
Graduates will be placed in the Central Bank Department within the SARB, from February 2026 to January 2027. During the programme, graduates will attend various learning interventions at the SARB Academy, including technical training. The programme offers opportunities for a Data Science track, and graduates will work in a Data Lab environment from time to time, on various use cases.

Terms and Conditions

•    The AU will have no financial obligation towards interns – travel arrangements and cost of accommodation and living expenses will be the responsibility of the interns. 
•    AU will use reasonable efforts to assist the interns in obtaining their entry and residence visas.
•    Interns will not be entitled to any compensation for travel. 
•    The internship will be authorized only once for three (3) month renewable one time for any candidate

All Niskanen Center interns receive up to a $1,000 monthly stipend.

Among other projects, Niskanen interns have accomplished the following:

  • Co-wrote and published a policy brief with senior staff in immigration
  • Wrote blog posts cited in the Washington Post and in the Washington Examiner
  • Built and managed the Niskanen Center’s Instagram account
  • Developed and managed content calendars for Niskanen Center communications efforts

  • One is an immigration policy fellow at the Niskanen Center.
  • One is a health policy analyst at the Niskanen Center.

Our interns are now also at MSNBC, Booz Allen Hamilton, McKinsey, Foreign Policy, the Daily Caller, the Cato Institute, the Department of Defense, Americans for Prosperity, the Center for Law and Social Policy, the Charter Cities Institute and others. Other former interns are in law school and some are pursuing graduate degrees in public policy, public administration, and economics.

The IOM Internship Programme provides students with the opportunity to learn about IOM’s activities, to gain initial work experience, and/or gain knowledge on a broad range of migration technical areas and disciplines. IOM provides on-the-job training to interns so that both they, and the Organization, can benefit. Furthermore, internships build links with academic institutions and universities. Each year, IOM welcomes hundreds of interns to work within IOM offices globally. Interns are given assignments and responsibility commensurate with their academic and professional experience and are placed under the guidance of a supervisor.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants to the IOM internship programme must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
  2. Be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    Have graduated with a university or graduate degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one-year of graduation; or
  3. Be sponsored by a governmental/non-governmental institution and/or academic institution to work in a specific area relevant to both IOM and the sponsor institution.
  4. All interns must be between 19 and 36 years of age (average age is 26).
  5. Furthermore, interns should have a working knowledge (both oral and written) of at least one of IOM’s official languages (English, French or Spanish).

Duration

Flexible internship: From 2 to 6 months depending on applicants availability.

Renumeration

Paid: While the majority of interns receive a monthly subsistence allowance (MSA), which is a monetary stipend to partially cover accommodation and living expenses, there are a few exceptions. For example, if IOM has an agreement with a university to provide internship assignments to its students as part of their coursework or when an intern is provided with funding/scholarship through their university, government or other institution. In exceptional cases, the Director of Human Resources can waive the MSA for interns who reside locally.

Travel Support:

It is the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institution to arrange for travel to and from the duty station upon commencement and conclusion of the internship. All related travel expenses, including visas, will be paid by the intern or sponsoring institution. IOM does not cover the cost of travel or visas; however, the office can prepare a visa support letter to facilitate the acquisition of a visa.

Internships in IOM Headquarters (Geneva): For advertised internships at IOM Geneva (Headquarters), internship vacancies start with “INT”.

Important: There is no specific time of the year for sending your application for an internship. If you were granted (or may be granted) a scholarship or your internship is a mandatory requirement for completing your studies, you should specify this in your cover letter, as well as the exact dates of the proposed internship. Remember to attach a letter from your sponsor or university confirming the purpose of the assignment, as well as the amount of your grant.
