A team of professors are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to evaluate how well newly-developed climate and hydrological projections capture the characteristics and mechanisms of Australian droughts. The candidate will then work towards reducing uncertainty in future drought projections. The project will enhance the national understanding of future drought risk to build resilience across Australia’s society, economy and environment and contribute to global efforts to improve modelling tools for future drought assessments.

The PhD candidate will be supervised by myself, Andrew Pitman, AO, FAA, and David Hoffmann. A competitive scholarship is available.

Program Details and Application Processes

GOAL’s NextGen Youth Programme brings together young people from all over the world to better understand global justice issues and deepen their understanding of Global Citizenship.

This programme will guide young, motivated changemakers to learn about the growing crises facing our world with a focus on climate and health systems.

Participants will then work together to imagine solutions for the future by creating awareness-raising materials that will feed into GOAL’s public engagement activities.

When will it take place?

The 2025 Programme will consist of 10 sessions that take place online, with 2 sessions in-person for Irish based participants.

In order to ensure participation of this global cohort, sessions will take place on Thursdays at 3pm Irish Time (8am Honduras, 2pm Sierra Leone, 4pm Zimbabwe, 5pm Ethiopia & Uganda).

What will I learn?

Over these 10 sessions, participants will work with peers globally to develop skills in critical thinking, intercultural communication, project management, teamwork, and the fundamentals of organising and implementing public awareness campaigns.

By taking part you will be empowered to:

  • Understand the diverse and interconnected nature of our world.
  • Critically interrogate the systems that perpetuate inequalities.
  • Reflect upon your own role and the role of others in tackling local and global challenges.
  • Engage in dialogue with others in a spirit of empathy, inclusivity, solidarity and collaboration.
  • Develop the courage, confidence and resilience to speak out for change.
  • Understand the GOAL’s work and have the opportunity to connect with GOAL staff.

What are we looking for in a candidate?

To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Current resident of Ireland, Ethiopia, Honduras, Iraq, Sierra Leone, Syria, Turkey, Uganda, or Zimbabwe.
  • Comfortably fluent in English.
  • Between 18 and 25 years old.
  • Available for 10 seminars between May and July. Sessions will fall on Thursdays and Saturdays (see timeline for actual dates).
  • Be open and willing to engage in teamwork in between seminars.
  • Demonstrate basic/emerging understanding of local and global issues.
  • Show clear initiative and desire to be a part of positive change (this could be demonstrated through volunteering, participation in local events, workshop facilitation, tutoring, creative extra-curricular activities, etc.).
  • Interest in participating in artistic methods of learning (this could be demonstrated through a passion for drama, art, creative writing, journalism, music or any other artistic discipline).
  • Reliable access to a “device” and internet is desired but not essential. If you do not have access to a device, please let us know in your application, and we will endeavour to support your participation.

The Australian Government Scholarship is a long-term award offered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. They are geared towards addressing the developmental needs of partner countries. They provide opportunities for citizens of these countries to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions. These opportunities help promote skills development and knowledge acquisition to help contribute to development in their home countries.

Benefits of the scholarship:

The Scholarships is offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education institution, including any preparatory training. The scholarship offers the following benefits:

  1. Full tuition fees
  2. Return air travel – payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
  3. Establishment allowance – a once only payment as a contribution towards accommodation expenses, text books, study materials
  4. Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) – a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by the department.
  5. Introductory Academic Program (IAP)–a compulsory program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on living and studying in Australia

The application process for the Summer School’s 2025 edition is open and will run until 17 March 2025 (midnight CET). 

How to Apply

To apply, you will need:

  1. A cover letter of max. 500 words explaining your background and motivation for enrolling to the Summer School;
  2. A CV in PDF format; and

2) Tuition fees for the online programme:

For postgraduate / PhD students: €615
For senior researchers, civil servants and employees of civil society organisations: €825
For other professionals: €1075
This fee includes all the classes and course materials, access to the online learning platform, and a certificate of attendance with the equivalence of 3 ECTS credits. The school reserves the right to only offer the programme on campus, depending on the number of online applications received.

Until 23 May 2025: 50% reimbursement of the tuition fee.
From 24 May 2025: no reimbursement of the tuition fee.

Scholarships

There are limited number of scholarships(about 3) which will be offered in the form of a tuition fee waiver, aimed at ensuring that meritorious applicants who would otherwise not be able to afford the course, can nevertheless participate. In their application form, those applying for a scholarship will be able to upload an additional letter in which they set out the reasons why they believe to be eligible for a tuition fee waiver.

In addition, successful applicants from LDC countries will receive a tuition fee discount of €150.
