The InteRussia team is launching a call for applications for the InteRussia scientific and research fellowship for non-Russian specialists in international relations, political science, and regional studies.

InteRussia is an opportunity for aspiring experts in history, theory and practice of international relations, political science, and regional studies to get fully immersed into Russian academia, visit policy-making institutions, get to know the Russian agenda first-hand, participate in expert sessions hosted by universities, think tanks and non-governmental organisations, as well as exchange experiences with counterparts from different countries.

The unique feature of the program is an opportunity for selected participants to work in close cooperation with and under the guidance of lead Russian IR scholars from MGIMO University.

The fellowship activities will be organised in English and hosted at MGIMO University from March 19 to April 30, 2025.

The topic of the 2025 spring fellowship is “Political Dynamics of the Global South.”

The deadline for applications is February 7, 11:59 p.m. Moscow time (UTC +3). The results of the competitive selection will be sent to all candidates via email.

The fellowship is to result in an original individual research project of 15,000-25,000 characters (incl. spaces) based on the submitted research proposal (in English).

Who can apply?

To participate in the competitive selection, applicants will have to meet the following requirements:

  1. non-Russian nationals;
  2. age 25-39;
  3. permanent residence outside of Russia;
  4. professional command of English (CEFR C1 and higher);
  5. submission of a research proposal;
  6. absence of any employment/previous enrollment in academic programs/other relations with MGIMO University;
  7. a Ph.D. degree or at least 3 years of working experience at academic institutions/think tanks or Ph.D. studies in progress.

Applicants for the fellowship will be selected on a competitive basis.

The competition criteria include:

  1. the academic level, relevance, maturity and feasibility of the applicant’s research proposal;
  2. academic publications;
  3. letters of recommendation (2-3);
  4. other research and expert activities of the applicant (conferences, grants awarded, academic fellowships, expert publications, opinion pieces/comments in the media, etc.);
  5. results of the online interview.

  1. Sign up on the English version of the Gorchakov Fund’s website. If you did not receive a registration verification email, check your spam folder.
  2. Navigate to the “My Projects” section, click on the “Create application” button, select the “InteRussia IR MGIMO 2025 (Spring)” contest and hit “Yes”.
  3. Fill in all mandatory fields.
  4. Click on the “Submit” button in the “Apply” section and wait for the status to change from “Preparing” to “Submitted”.

Terms of participation:

The organisers will cover the following costs:

  • travel expenses to/from Moscow;
  • single accommodation in the MGIMO dormitory;
  • visa support;
  • a scholarship of RUB 30,000 for the entire duration of the six-week fellowship.

The following costs are borne by the participants:

  • medical insurance;
  • meals.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Director of the initiative or any other staff member assigned by the
director, the interns will assist in the performance of the following duties:
➢ graphic design of fliers, use Adobe software to create and edit videos and reels, previous
experience in this is mandatory
➢ research, collect and prepare reports on countrywide land restoration and habitat conservation
efforts, from Government, private sector and community
➢ research, collect information and prepare reports on regional land degradation and habitat
conservation efforts such as Great Green Wall and Green Middle East Initiative
➢ conduct review of the framework laws on restoration in G20 countries and prepare a
compendium on what are the provisions for environmental restoration after mining is over
➢ monitor social media for topics relevant for the global initiative

Expected Qualifications/Skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet the
following requirements:

  • be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree (science, arts, engineering,
    forestry, agriculture or related topics) programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • have graduated with a university degree and, must commence the internship within a one-year
    period of graduation.
  • research skills: ability to perform effective and efficient internet searches, and desk research;
  • writing skills: ability to draft and edit content for publication in the language he/she shall be
    working in, i.e. English, Arabic, French or Spanish.
  • planning and organizing: ability to work in an organized and structured wa.
  • computer literate, with sound knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite.

These fully funded scholarships are designed for ambitious and high-achieving individuals who are eager to begin their PhD journey in September 2025. The Hardiman PhD Scholarships provide a stipend of €25,000 per annum and cover full tuition fees for four years, allowing recipients to focus entirely on their research and academic growth.

Who Should Apply?

The Hardiman PhD Scholarships are intended for individuals who are passionate about research and creativity, and who are eager to contribute positively to the future of society. Assessment Process

The selection process will be based on the quality and excellence of the application. All applications must be complete and submitted by the deadline of 7th February 2025 at 17:00 (Irish Time). Incomplete applications will not be assessed. The application will include a Personal Research Statement, Academic Qualifications, Referee Reports, and Prior Research Experience.

Applications from candidates with disabilities will be considered under the special Hardiman PhD Scholarship award criteria. Verification of disability must be provided by the closing date.

The assessment panel will consist of experienced assessors from various backgrounds. All shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview via Skype, MS Teams, or Zoom, which will take place between 10th April and 23rd April 2025.
